Casual Adventures in Design

Casual Adventures in Design

Hi there,

It’s been a while right? I’ve been so busy producing deliverables for class projects and chasing the career lately that I’ve fallen behind in terms of sharing. But Spring Break was a great breather for me; I went home, saw the family, went skiing, and forgot for a short bit about upcoming deadlines and to-do lists. And with this slight reprieve from chasing deadlines, I’d like to share what I’m working on now.

I’m taking a class about getting a product produced through industrial manufacture, and we get to choose what we will produce. I decided to revisit a past project that I felt never reached an acceptable level of completion. You can see my first go at Keeper boxes here.

So right now I’m just in the initial stages of figuring out how they’ll be made, sketching and making informal prototypes to help me make decisions about construction, material, and interaction. Here are some snapshots of my desk right now:

So that’s where I’m at right now. I need to try some different sizes and start making stuff out of real materials and see if this idea works in real life now. And hopefully I’ll do a better job of sharing as I go along. It’s good for me to document the process.

Happy Spring!

Kelly

I’ve been thinking a lot about interfacing with memory lately, whether holding on to mementos is a good or a bad thing, why we do it, why some people want to deny doing it, and why it develops into hoarding disorder for others. It always seems to come back to how we construct our personal identities. Its an introspective act, these…

CloudKeys: a new digital engagement

Pres_Final

All semester I’ve been focusing on a question that I believe is important for designers to recon with in the coming years, which is understanding how our relationship with objects is changing in the digital era. I was originally interested in this topic because I was curious about what makes us bond sentimentally to objects, and that question narrowed down into how that connection changes with…

This was another discursive project, so what I’d really love is to hear how you would use this and what questions it raises for you. Any feedback will be helpful to my research!

This is a discursive design, meant to raise questions and cause conversation. Please let me know how you would use this, and what questions it raises for you.

what is digital?

Wordpress_title

the first project I’ve done with my investigation of cherishability in the digital era was an aesthetic experimentation around what a digital device looks like and fundamentally what a digital device is. Thank you to all my friends who responded to my prompts on facebook and instagram, and those who participated in the object sorts.

cherishability in the digital era

In studio we will be focusing on one research topic for the next year. It seemed like a big commitment, but our professors helped us really parse out what we were interested in and find good sources that will inform our work.

My research culminated in the drafting of my research statement that will guide my design explorations for the next year:

I am working on understanding how cherishable…

Unexpected Connected

When Ideas and Interests Collide

The explanatory poster I made for our critique.

Our first project in studio this semester was to make the thing we came to graduate school to do.

I made a deck of cards that will serve to inspire new projects by juxtaposing my interests and questions with goals for design and who I might take into consideration. Through this game, I challenge myself to answer my own questions but in ways that I might not think of on my own. Its a real deck of…

Podcast to Design

Deck12

This is my first project of the summer. I was hoping to finish it in 2 weeks, but it actually took me 3 because I got a job after the first week, so that took out some work time. I’m also pretty sure this project isn’t done because I want to make the final product and test it out with people. That being said, I’d love feedback for going forward with this concept or ideas of other concepts you…
